anyone want to do Solvang on cruisers?(13 posts)

anyone want to do Solvang on cruisers?DougSloan

I'm thinking of doing Solvang on the Milano (with fenders now, too). I know it's cheating a little, with 7 speeds, but it's probably sufficiently slow to qualify. Might be fun to do a group "cruise."

It's this Saturday, March 8. http://www.bikescor.com/solvang/rideinfo.htm

do it on a single speed balooon tire cruiser! i was thinking of doing a century on my GT/Dyno Deuce this summer just for the heck of it.
Yeah, it only took me about 3 months to heal ...Humma Hah

... after I did it.

Solvang has close to 6000 ft of climbing, and I'll allow a handful of gears as possibly useful.
is it really that much climbing?laffeaux

I did Solvang last year and it didn't seem like 6000 feet of climbing. Is it really that many?
Closer to 4500. (nm)CHRoadie

There are variations on the course. I've done it three times now (2000, 2001, 2002) and I think I've done three different courses. Mainly it's the part through Vandenberg and into Santa Maria that changes--the rest stays the same.
2001 I measured about 5900 ft ...Humma Hah

... on the altimeter cyclocomputer. That's guaranteed to be a little high.

It ain't the Death Ride, but it ain't flat, either.
YES! But I can't.Humma Hah

There's a possibility I'll get out to Oakland for a day or two in May, but no chance to get to Solvang this spring.

Tis a shame ... I'll bet its beautiful. The last 20 miles or so in 2001 was some of the prettiest countryside I've ever seen.

Sorry, but I'm going to stick with my 5500. Hey, but what about the FC508 this year? You could do your share of the 4 man on the Milano! Everyone would be very impressed. :-)
I suggested he finish on it ...Humma Hah

... Imagine the looks you'd get rolling across the finish on it! I envision a bike swap about 2 miles out.

Thought about that the first time. However, after pressing my crew to save every second possible, I didn't think they'd "get it."

The relay team would not have appreciated that, and even less so. Quite a contrast in speed between a Cervelo P3 and Zipp 909 wheels and the upright 30 pound Milano.

I did it before the LAX circuits last year. I won't be doing that again. Would have been different if I had cruised it but for several reasons I didn't, I hammered it.
