Why are cyclists so elitist?(29 posts)

Why are cyclists so elitist?PODIUMBOUNDdotCA
Feb 21, 2003 10:28 AM
People get upset because cycling attracts lawyers and doctors who can be pretty big snobs to other cyclists. Yet when it comes to who's who of the sporting world cyclists end up right up there as the lawyers and doctors. This is proven in the Tour de France getting ranked #8 on the usa today top 10 list... right behind *gasps* running a marathon. Now the Tour de France is longer so it must be harder! PFFF give it a break.

Long before I was ever truely a cyclist I was an athlete. I've been fortunate enough to participate in a lot of sports in my life and by the time I was 18 found one that was my best bet to achieve my Olympic ambitions.

My 2 cents,
Nick

Lazywriter "Why are so many Roadies elitist and arrogant" 2/2/03 12:53pm

a good way to find responses to this question would be to search the board for "elite", "elitist", and/or "snob".

I cringed when i read your topic b/c this has the makings of another page-long thread that starts and ends absolutely where we've already been, and includes much heated debate that's already been said & read. how about letting this one go?
Sorry... add this question to the FAQ :) (nm)PODIUMBOUNDdotCA

Typically the arguments goes like this:

Li'l sis: Daaadddd!!!! he's bothering me, he's taking my toy!
Big bro: Did not!
Li'l sis: Did too!
Did nooottt!!!
Did toooooo!!!
Dad:(noticing the argument escalating...) Quit bothering your sister or I'll give both of you a time out...(and proceeds to lecture about importance of sharing...)

Silence (for two minutes...)...

Li'l sis: (Blood curddling sream!!) Daaaadddd!!! He's doing it agaaaiinnn!!!
Big bro: NYA-AAHH!!!
Li'lsis: Ah-Huhh!!!
NYA-AAHH!!! NYA-AHH!!!
Ah-Huhh!!! Ah-Huhh!!!
Dad: (realizing that he's got to take control of a fully escalated debate in front of him...) Give me that toy and go to your rooms for a 10 minute time out!...

Both kids: (almost in unison) That's my toy!!! I DESERVE IT!!!

Dad (At this point Dad must really show who's in charge) says:

NYA-AAHH!!! NYA-AAHH!!! NYA-AAHH!!!

With head hung low and realizing with SOPHISTICATED COMPLEXITY, both kids go quietly into their rooms realizing that sometimes the world can be CRUEL and UNFAIR.

Cheers,

W.

You're a 19 yo college student aspiring to be an olympic cyclist?

Every minute you spend here is wasted. Go ride your frigin bike, get some chicks, and party. Are you on the Northern tip of Canada. Is the snow up to your second story window? There's got to be something for you to do.

The rest of us come here to take a break from our JOBS. I'd rather work than read your endless drivel!!!! Enough Already!!!!!!!!!

Nick, it's to the point where NO ONE gives a rat's ass what you think. We wish you would just go away. I strongly suggest to everyone else that Nick is nothing but a troll, and a very skilled one. His posts are consistently self promoting, attention getting, and let's not forget, obtuse. I suggest he just does this for attention, a fact that is increasingly obvious. How about we all just ignore all his brainless ramblings and delusional crapflood? I'm willing to bet that if he didn't get a flood of responses every time he posted his drivel that he would go away and (hopefully) ride his friggin bike. Call me sickofit.

If its such a crap flood then why hasn't anyone argued my points? I think the true crap floods whether intentional or not are the ones argueing that the TDF is "only" #8 on the worlds toughest sport feats.

Nobody's argued your points because none of your posts have a point. It's like you can't fight what doesn't exist.

If you're a cyclist, then you're elitist, right? So ask yourself.

Oh, you're not elitist? Then I guess that just takes all the air out of your question, doesn't it?

Let's analyze this post... sorry to spell this out for you, Nick, but this is what the others are referring to:

[statement]People get upset because cycling attracts lawyers and doctors who can be pretty big snobs to other cyclists.

[statement]Yet when it comes to who's who of the sporting world cyclists end up right up there as the lawyers and doctors.

[statement- although it PROVES nothing}This is proven in the Tour de France getting ranked #8 on the usa today top 10 list... right behind *gasps* running a marathon.

[statement- and assumption}Now the Tour de France is longer so it must be harder!

[???]PFFF give it a break.

[OBLIGATORY self-agrandisement]Long before I was ever truely a cyclist I was an athlete. I've been fortunate enough to participate in a lot of sports in my life and by the time I was 18 found one that was my best bet to achieve my Olympic ambitions.

My 2 cents,
Nick

[non-sequitor]PS Notice I've given up on the endurance vs. sprinting rant :)

I fail to see ANY question in your post- there is nothing that encourages the EXCHANGE of ideas. Your loose associations of statements do not constitute an argument.

Just a pointer: the self-agrandisement tends to put people off- and it is present in almost all of your posts- it in effect makes the post about YOU.

I'm half convinced you have trouble with impulse control related to your head injuries... have you looked into that at all?

For anyone who's been reading Nick's posts lately, you can tell he's not made himself into much of a popular fellow around here. However, all the replies he's been receiving has forced me to ask myself this: whatever happened to not reading, or not responding to, posts by posters you don't like?

I'll Admit, Nick comes off as arrogent in some of his posts, but who cares? Will telling him that give him some huge realization about his behaviour? Will it make you feel better about yourself? Has it worked when similar responses were given to similar posts of his?

If you think Nick, or anyone else, is a troll, then DON'T FEED HIM!

By the way, there seems to be lots in the way hypocrisy here. I mean, sure Nick can seem arrogant, immature, and irresponsible, but take a look at so many other posters on this board! Remember that post from the guy asking if he should sue the company that made his sunglasses because they broke in a crash? Remember the responses he got? The majority were offensive, personal attacks about how big of an unrealistic pussy he was for considering a lawsuit.

This guy was asking a serious question, and I was embarrased by the type of responses he was given. That attitude is the exact sort that makes so many people dislike cyclists! It really made me wonder who was the arrogant, Holier-then-thou type cylists here. I'll admit I've made a couple offensive replies myself, but at least I quickly learned that they really don't accomplish anything.
meant to post this on a seperate thread, reply above nmempacher6seat
