Climate around Shawnee? Sorry, non-cycling relatedKristin

But its outdoor related, so I hope to be forgiven. I have an opportunity to hike some of the more difficult trails at Shawnee the first week of April. But I don't have much cold weather gear. How is the climate in that area in early spring?

There are suposed to be some fairly streneuous trails in the Shawnee National forest. Though I've never been there. Believe me anything is better than nothing. I live in Chicago.

I hear ya. I think I've mentioned that I really like visiting Chicago in early Fall. Have fun in the forest, I can't offer any help, I've never been there.

hmmmm.

I was born and raised in the Shawnee natl forest - near Carbondale.. (Lived in a tree).

The Shawnee has lotsa parks, and lakes to hike around, Fern Cliff, Giant City, others. Lake Kinkaid, Devil's Kitchen.

The weather in April will be gorgeous. Snow will be gone, flowers & trees in bloom, dogwoods smell great in the woods.
Ground will prob be wet in the woods from occasional spring rains... Night time temps around 40-50, daytime maybe up to 60-70... pack for rain..

Probably Carbondale Chamber of commerce is a good place to start for maps, directions, etc to the parks in that area.

Do a google for Fern Cliff state park, Giant City, etc

Have fun

Dave

They're aren't really any 'difficult' trials in the Shawnee... you could do a river-to-river hike if so inclined...
