|I have a pretty flat foot and I am wandering if the numbness is caused by the contour of my Shimano carbon shoes which slopes in the middle.|

|I have somewhat flat feet and of the 4 pairs of Shimano shoes I have no such problems. The inside is flat though so I don't see it causing problems unless you cut the inner sole out and didn't replace it... my guess is the contour is there just to make room for the mounting hardware.
As for the numbness your experiencing I'd recommend calling some podiatrists and finding one that knows how to get cycling orthotics. They do exist its just a matter of finding a doctor who can get them. Only problem is this will set you back quite a bit of money... depending on your insurance it might pay for some of it though.

|You might benefit from even more contour from an orthotic. I had lots of numbness and pain when doing high mileage (500mi/wk), and off the shelf orthotics cured it permanently.

|You can't make a blanket statement. Try some different inserts - they may fit your foot better. Also check strap tension - you may be over tightening the closures.|

|Unless your racing the straps don't need to be even tight. If they are you are just going to cut circulation off.
