|How you doin? I was wondering if smoking doobs hinders your riding performance. I have a friend that smokes a lot of pot and rides, and I am trying to get him to quit. He says it doesn't hinder his performance.|

Keep those lungs pink...Pot has anywhere from 10 to 20 times the amount of tar that cigs do. Then again your friend probably doesn't smoke 20 joints a day. Still moderation is key. Once or twice a week is probably not going to do a whole lot as to hinder performance but it certianly won't help. If he rides when he's high however there can be a severe endurance detriment. Riding when your high is also pretty damn unsafe but I'll save that lecture because it was not that long ago when one of my favourite things to do was to smoke a joint and bomb around helmetless in rush hour traffic. I was an idiot. Now my bike gets me high.

|Depends on how much you smoke. It doesn't matter what he smokes- cigarettes or pot or dry lawn clippings- it will hinder lung function if he smokes enough of it to build up deposits in his lungs. Your lungs naturally move foreign material up and out at a certain rate. If you smoke often enough that material builds up in your lungs faster than they can expel it, your lungs will suffer. Filters and water bongs cut down on the material inhaled, but if you smoke enough of it, it will build up in your lungs. Tell him to keep it to once or twice a week, use a good water bong, and have a beer instead the other days.|

|Smoking will require a rider to take one or both of their hands off the handlebar while riding, which may be unwise to do under certain circumstances. The faster you go, the worse it is. On a similar note, you don't find many women drivers racing in NASCAR, because fixing their makeup or their hair while driving fast is a definite no-no.|

|... breathing can be tough enuff without adding concentrated suspended particulate matter that also alters your state of mind...
What I wanna know is... do dingleberrys hinder your riding performance? I mean, I know that Florida had that problem with hanging chads and all...
Be the bike.

|knock it off with that "how you doin" crap. its obnoxious. Sure the Sopranos is a good show, but ever time i read those three words i think of Joey on Friends.
I hate Joey. I hate Friends.

|Smoking pot OCCASIONALLY before a ride will act to dilate the bronchioles in your lungs. However, chronic marijuana smoking will cause the airways to constrict, not to mention the devolopment lung dysfunction and/or cancer (long-term). Advise your friend to eat it instead.|

|First off, Pot is in no real way healthy for you. I HAVE LOOKED INTO THIS! Lots of pot heads like to claim it is, but it is not.
Second, if it isn't hindering his performance then he probably isn't trying very hard.
Third, Wacky Tabacy ain't cheap. (If it is your wasting your time.) You could have a pretty darn nice bike for what you'll spend on it for a year.
Fourth, and nobody seems to care. It is illegal. It's pretty hard to ride a bike from jail.

|smoking pot is not a good combo with endurance sports--though i think the lesser frequency of smoking makes it less of a problem than those who smoke cigs. funny how the body puts up with all forms of abuse. i've known some high level racers (who mostly specialize in crits by the way) who smoke the herb before races even. I've seen guys on week long organized rides get to the top of a pass and pull out a cig at the top.|

|Your shorts become baggy, your helmet grows a visor, your socks turn from light to dark, and one day and you realize you're posting on MTBR.com. . .Ahhhhhhh, the horror! :-)
