Couple newbie questions...DSR
Feb 17, 2003 12:40 PM
My new used bike showed up and I got out for a decent ride yesterday. Pretty fun. Amazing how a true road bike just sails on the road. I had a 'cross bike which felt fast super-fast compared to my mtb, but nothing like this! Anyway, a couple quick questions that most people here could answer...

- What psi do you generally run on road tires?
- With a double chain ring set-up, are you ok using the full cassette with both the inner and outer ring or does the chainline angle get too extreme as with a triple?
- I assume Dura Ace/Ultegra cranks and chain rings are compatible (ie, an Ultegra ring will fit a DA crank), correct?
- What's the leading cause of road flats? Mtbing, it's usually from pinch flats, but I assume this is fairly rare running 100+ psi on a road tire. Is it from punctures?
- Anyone have a good road bike maintenance book/resource that they'd recommend?
- What's the standard road biker greeting when passing in the other direction? A nod? Quick wave? I kind of stick my hand out like a biker wave, but most people ignored me!

Thanks all. S

-What psi do you generally run on road tires?

... I'm a larger rider and generally run 120/120 PSI on road machines... about 160/180 PSI on tubulars...

- With a double chain ring set-up, are you ok using the full cassette with both the inner and outer ring or does the chainline angle get too extreme as with a triple?

... While not generally recommended, 9 speed drivetrains seem to be able to handle cross chaining fairly well unless under extreme power/torque... Longterm use would probably cause premature wear and tear on the drivetrain as well as obviating the fact that you probably had that particular ratio available without an extreme chainline...

- I assume Dura Ace/Ultegra cranks and chain rings are compatible (ie, an Ultegra ring will fit a DA crank), correct?

... Fundamentally yes...

- What's the leading cause of road flats? Mtbing, it's usually from pinch flats, but I assume this is fairly rare running 100+ psi on a road tire. Is it from punctures?

... Personally, most of my flats are from foreign object punctures...

- Anyone have a good road bike maintenance book/resource that they'd recommend?

... http://www.parktool.com (see repair help section)...

- What's the standard road biker greeting when passing in the other direction? A nod? Quick wave? I kind of stick my hand out like a biker wave, but most people ignored me!

... A nod... remember, sometimes riders are out on training rides and aren't intentionally being "rude" but are somewhat "zoned"... also note that the other rider has a different POV... they might be busy controlling their machine (avoiding oncomming obstacles... looking ahead around the next corner... trying to catch Ms Bodacious that passed you a couple minutes ago...) instead of being distracted to wave or say hi...

Be the bike.

Have a look at Shimano Europe web site - http://www.shimano-europe.com/cycling/

Under Tips you will see an article on Best Gear Combinations. It gives the party line that you can use all the rear cogs, but tells you which of the combinations really do not work well. On a double, these are the little ring, two smallest cogs, and big ring, one largest cog.

I run anywhere from 5 to 10 psi above recomended pressure

Yes, although you may notice the chain rubbing either the inner or outer part of the front derailure. I always set my bikes up so that the chain slightly rubs the front derailure when in the larges sprocket on the cassette so I know ive reached the limit.

Yes

Debrise in the road

Any good bike shop should explain or show you anything you need to know.

Unfortunately all roadies arent the same as mouontain bikers. This is one reason I do very little road racing anymore and focus more on the mountainbike racing or the long distance road groups.
