1st group ride...Triphop

...and I got dropped. LOL!

On encouragement from a friend and the fiance I decided to give it a go. I started riding pavement early fall, up until yesterday my longest ride was 42 miles. This ride would be 4 hours. I figured this ride would be the LSD miles I read about here, no problem....hahahahaha!!!!

Getting there, I drove 20 minutes from Westminster to Denver to my buddy's place, then we rode about 15 minutes further south to the meeting point. After about 2 hours of riding, I realize we are only a few miles from MY house! At this point I was starting to feel a little fatigue, but I was eating and drinking, confident I could hang in. (Must admit I was tempted just to ride home...LOL!) After the turn around, it soon felt like the pace picked up quite a bit...and a few miles later that was it, I spent myself trying to hang on...and now understand the difference of being on a wheel and TRYING to get back on from just 5 feet off.

I tried to push it to stay within sight of the group, but soon had to swallow my pride and accept that I was now dropped! I had previously told my buddy that it was cool for him to stay with the group if I got dropped. I thought to myself, I have water, food, pump, tube and patch problem...I will just ride back at my own pace. I was humbled greatly. Now I was really enjoying myself, just happy to be riding, not concerned about keeping up. A few miles down the road I came to the turn to head back east, and there waiting was my friend. Good friend, I thought to myself. So, he and I rode back to Denver at our own pace, just enjoying the ride and the comraderie. Just after 4 hours and 70+ miles we rolled back up to his place in Denver. Riding through downtown was really cool with no traffic!

Things I learned...I am no where near in as good of shape I thought I was. Drafting is very important! A completely new found respect for racers of all abilities. Just being out riding is truely a wonderful thing. A renewed value in friendship. Humility.

I can't wait to do it again! :)

Wow, that takes some guts! Good for you. Glad you enjoyed it, that is what it is all about, enjoyment. But 70 miles is a serious amount of realestate to cover on your first group ride!

Good Story...Soon You Will School Them!BigLeadOutGuy

Nice job for your first group ride!
Next time around will be easier and then even more so the time after that! Before you know it you'll be pulling the pack all day long!!
Keep up the hard work =)
