for what reason do they recommend special brake pads for carbonwheels? dammaging the rim and/or better braking?

Both. The pads are supposedly non-abrasive, which saves the rim. And the compound is "optimized" for the carbon surface, which helps braking. At least that's what all of the marketing hype says... I have carbon wheels and use the Campy carbon pads and think they work better than the regular Campy pads YMMV.

Better braking. The carbon fibre rim will not dissipate the heat like an aluminum rim will thus causing the brake pad to get much hotter. This can cause the brake pad to melt and leave a rubber deposit on the rim. There isn't any real problem with this other than you can't stop as quickly when the pad is melting. The carbon fibre rim is very hard, much harder than aluminum and will also wear the brake pad quicker even if it isn't melting. I have had my all carbon fibre rims for over 4 years and can not notice any wear where the brake pads rub even though I have been using the standard DA pads.
