freaky question... wire beadsfunknuggets

Help me out here. Was on the way home yesterday and drove by an older guy on an older road bike walking it in a particularly desolate stretch. I pulled over and asked if he needed a ride and he said he had a flat tire. I happened to have a road tube and a small pump and some tire levers in the back of the jeep so I said I could get him back up and going. Much to my chagrin I put the first lever in and tried to pry the bead up and could NOT get the lip up and over the rim, and ended up snapping off the edge of two specialized tire tools and eventually got an edge over with the third one. I had a wheel skewer as well and used it to try and pull the rest of the bead over. Man, I have never had as difficult a time pulling a tire off. while pulling the skewer along, a portion of rubber coating on the bead came off revealing a wire bead that was easily 2mm in DIAMETER!!! Is there any nice way to pull these ba$tards off without wasting tools. I eventually got it back on for him and put him on his way, but holy crap I was sweating and my hands were hurting from pulling that bad boy off and on?

I use metal tire levers for those jobs...

Wire beads are positively unforgiving.
