In the picture of this bike on ebay http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2709224966 it looks like the small ring is in between the big ring and the medium ring. Do my eyes need checked? If it is indeed between is there some sort of advantage that I don't know about?

no, may just be your eyes and the way it looks in the pic. If it truly were in the middle, since the chain is on the small ring, you would expect to see the chain cross in front of the ring behind.

Secondly, I have no earthly clue how they would even make a crank that would allow the little in the middle. Relax, grasshopper, your eyes deceive you.

Optical illusion, though I have seen people use larger chainrings arouns a medium sized ring similar to "rock rings" for MTBs or as chain retainers on 'cross rigs.
But you can't see the spider on the medium chainring?? (nm)PODIUMBOUNDdotCA

I'm not sure what's goign on. In the cahin ring clos up, it sure looks like the granny gear is in the middle. Where the chain travels around the top of the small ring it appears to be in front of the middle ring. Very odd, but I agree with the others that it has to be an optical illusion. Or does it ....??
