Velomax vs. Velocity/AmClassic(6 posts)

Velomax vs. Velocity/AmClassicmass_biker

It comes down to this - Velomax wheelset (either Circuit Comp or Ascent Comp) vs. a build incorporating American Classic Micro hubs and the Velocity Aerohead (or CR350) rim.

Looking for light/somewhat aero. I am <150lbs and need a good fast training/racing wheelset.

Feedback from folks with first hand experience on any of these setups would be greatly appreciated.

I canNOT recommend this wheelset-- especially not for trainning. I am a 145lbs. spinner who took a chance on a lightweight wheelset and I paid the price for it. They are superbly light and very comfortable wheels. However, they are incredibly flexy and weak. The front rubs the brake when climbing and I need to true them just about every month. I understand they have a newer version out (Ascent II) but I've regreted my purchase every time I ride these wheels.
My experience is just the opposite.Horace Greeley

I'm a bit heavier (158 lbs), mainly a spinner, and have had zero flex and truing issues. I'm on the original Ascents, not the Ascent II. This is after almost 2K miles and some direct hits of potholes, etc. I don't dispute your observations, just wanted to mention a differing experience. Of course, I'm probably jinxed now, just like the dreaded mention of zero flats in "fill in the blank".

I've had the Ascents for 4 years now with no problems. I only race on these but they've gotten a good 7-8K hard racing miles; only trued once during this time. I'm a very strong sprinter and really like the stiffness thep provide and the light weight is also a bonus. A fellow racer is also building a wheelset with the exact items you mentioned; I'll be interested to know how they turn out.
Just curious....Horace Greeley

when your acents needed to be trued, did you use a local LBS or send them back to Velomax?

Took it to the LBS; no problem. They did recommend that I lube the nipples every now and again; White lightning in fact.
