|I crashed yesterday going down a trail on my mtb. Legs and arms everywhere, bike on top of that, it was very messy. I landed mostly on my left leg, and now it hurts like if I had been kicked 100 times in the leg. |
I bought arnica oil and have been rubbing it all evening and morning on the leg, it slightly improved, but I am still walking as if I were 90 years old, and each muscle in my thigh is hurting... I'm discovering muscles I had no idea they existed, but I would have preferred staying ignorant since those muscles hurt. Is there a gel/cream/whatever that you recommend for such a situation ?

|My recommendation: Advil/Ibuprofen and a heating pad. If you need to be up and about, get some heating cream like Ben Gay.|

|Cold is better at first because it supposed to keep swelling and bruising down.|

|Sounds like a normal reaction, and probably not that big a deal (pain in a JOINT, for instance, could indicate an injury). A couple of aspirin or ibuprofen every six hours for a few days should help, if you think you need it. As a guide, if the pain diminishes as you warm up, it's OK to exercise. If it gets worse, then you might want to see a doctor.
In the words of my doctor/riding buddy, "Topical application of analgesics (meaning to rub on a painkiller) is about as good as sticking your finger up your @ss."

|Sounds like it'll just take time so be patient. Barring that, I've used Arnica Montana tablets that you dissolve under your tongue in addition to arnica cream. Seems to offer additional relief.
Also I use a Chinese linament called 'Zheng Gu Shui'. Smells like turpentine but really helps, esp. if used under the arnica cream/oil. Found a link for it at:

|Do not use heat for the first 48 hours after an injury! You are all sore because you probably bruised and injured some soft tissue. It will take a week or so to heal up. Take your advil, around 600 mg every 6 hours to help the soreness and use the ice for approx. 10-20 min at a time. After the first 48 hours you can try moist heat if you want. Give it some time.

|First day - apply ice or cold water to injured area (I know that it is to later to you but may be useful for someone else). Put ice or water in the plastic bag before application.
From second day (or from third day if you are heavily grazed) mild heat in any form (heating pad, hot-water bottle etc.).
There are a lot of useful oinments but I'm not from US so I don't know which are available to you.

|Didn't use ice yesterday - it was a bit hot, but not really too much. Right now, strangely it hurts less if I pedal than if I walk. But my top speed got down to ~11mph ! I'll go tonight to a chinese shop to get the Zheng Gu Shui. |
