Palos Verdes - SoCal Ride Question(3 posts)

Palos Verdes - SoCal Ride Questionchazman

I know there is a bike lane on PV West from at least Malaga Park heading south to Paseo Lunado since I run that route. Does the bike lane continue if you follow the PV loop (PV West to PV South to PV East etc.)? Any suggestions for a road ride around PV where I do not have to worry about getting to close to cars?

Thanks!

The bike lane ends at the Wayfarer's Chapel. There is ongoing roadwork to expand the road to 4 lanes south of Portuguese bend, but who knows when it will be complete. If you don't want to get close to cars, turn around at the Wayfarer's Chapel, otherwise it's about 4 - 5 miles to the bottom of the switchbacks on a road with a thin shoulder.

Another option might be to go up Hawthorne, as it's a 4 lane road, but that will be a long, long haul to the top.

I ride that loop every weekend or so, and the car traffic isn't too bad on the stretch with no bike lane. The greater problem is the uneven pavement from landslides and patchwork repair. The Hawthorne climb isn't too bad -- it's only about a mile and a half of steep stuff, then it almost levels out and the descent (either continuing on Hawthorne, or turning left or around at the gas station at the top) is a blast. Gotta be one of the greatest road rides in Southern California no matter which way you go.
