How are Speedplay Pedals for Commuting ?Maartin

Anybody using Speedplays for commuting and how do like them.. I currently have some old heavy 427 gram Look Type pedals (work fine)on a Trek 5200 Carbon and thought the Speedplays might be just the ticket. Light weight and double sided which helps when starting for a stop light. Any comments welcome.
Road cleat/pedal systems are bad for commuting...eschelon

I may be wrong but all of the road cleat/pedal systems are not "walking friendly." But on the other hand, mountain bike cleat/pedal systems are...hell you can even run with them (cleats on the shoes). Shimano SPD is great with mountain no one will hear you "clicking" when you are walking around on your shoes.

I use them on a road bike. The MTB shoes/cleat combo is easy to walk in. I like the float and the super-easy release, the latter being especially nice when drivers stop unexpectedly.

Been using Frogs for eight years. I like them better than the Speedplay road pedals. And the new cleat design is a huge improvement. With good mtb shoes (like Carnacs) I don't really feel like I'm giving up much to a good road combo.

I use speedplay x's. I also bought those "coffee can" plastic/rubber covers that snap over the cleat on the shoes. They aren't as good as mtn shoes for walking, but are pretty good for short walks locking the bike, walking to/fro the shower and office, around the coffee shops, etc. uh, anyone know why the covers are called coffee cans? i think that's what they're called.
LOL! They're coffee *caps,* Emily Litella! :-) (nm)PseuZQ

I have found that the cleat for speedplay pedals wares out quickly. In addition any amount of dirt in the cleat means disassembling them and cleaning them. The cleats cost about $35, whereas Look cleats last longer, shed dirt better, and cost about $15. Also Look pedals last a very long time with very little maintenance, the speedplays require more upkeep.

However, I have never tried the "Frogs" and as they are made for the dirt they are probably a better design?
Did two years with them53T

Best thing since sliced bread. The two-sided design is perfect for heads up in-traffic manuvering. As far as dirt in the cleats, I commute on roads, without walking. My cleats don't ever see dirt.
