gearing: another ultegra & xt questionJS Haiku Shop

I currently have ultegra triple 52/42/30 with XT 11-32 on my 'cross bike, and it works fine.

will ultegra double 53/39 work with XT and a cassette as low as 34? btw, i'm not thinking of changing the 'cross setup--this is unrelated to that bike.

TIA!

with dura/ace and XTR with a 12/34 rear cassette. Other than the 3 cog jumps, it worked flawlessly.

It'll work, but I'd do it the other way.Spoke Wrench

I'd keep the triple and substitute a tighter cassette, like a 12-25 or a 12-27, in back. That will give you smaller steps between gears. I think that you'll like that better than the wide range cassette, particularly on flatter rides.

My bike is set up with an XT RD. I use a 13-30 cassette when I plan on riding hills. It works fine but the shifting is not as crisp as with the road derailleur on a smaller cassette. A more deliberate effort when shifting to a lower gear is necessary on my bike. When riding on the flats the large spread between gears makes it difficult to find a comfortable rhythm.

looks like 39/34 is **almost** equivalent to 30/27. sweet!
