It's been hovering around zero (F) for the last week or so. In spirit of making lemonade out of lemons, the nice folks at Quality Bike sponsored the Chilli Chilly Bike Race today. It warmed up to about 12F, but the wind was stiff.

A nice bonfire for the racers and spectators to gather around.
The race was on a frozen lake. Two races, an open class and a Masters class. I missed the Open race with about 25 riders. These shots are from the Masters race. 30 laps 9 riders.

Here are the racers running about 30 yards to their bikes at the start
Why do they run to the bikes???? nmBruno S

It did serve as a method for staggering the start. There was a hairpin glare ice corner about 25 yards down course from the start. Because they ran to the bikes & mounted, the whole field didn't hit it turn at once. So, maybe that's it.

One cross bike, one single speed and the rest mountain bikes.

The organizers sweep the corners to add a little excitement to the race.

This was a frequent sight, but I'm not fast enough with the camera and missed the more spectacular wipeouts.

After less than 10 laps it was down to a 3 man race. The eventual 1st and 2nd place finishers are on the right in the photo. The 3rd place rider is in the background about to lap the rider in grey and red.

Here's our winner coming in. It was neck and neck in the last series of turns. The 2nd place rider slid out while trying for a pass, giving the winner the commanding lead you see here.
Looks fun & beats riding a trainerTig

OK, maybe not all that fun, but a good challenge that got everyone outside to ride. I've never heard of anyone racing on a frozen lake! Did anyone have steel studded tires?

I'm a wimp for not riding in 40 degree rain this morning.
I'm pretty sure EVERYONE had steel studs. (nm)Scot_Gore

Yes. It's in the single digits and I was out a few days ago on my mountain bike. :)

But I hate rain so I don't blame you.
Wish I could have been there.MB1

I like the fishing shanty in the background. It's amazing to me that people can enjoy fishing through a hole in the ice for hours on end. There's not enough beer in the keg to make that fun.

You know they guy in the shanty was thinking "What are those fools doing riding out here on the ice." I can't really blame him.

I was considering bopping over there but we got trapped at a
friend of my wifes that afternoon. Glad I could see some
shots depicting the action.

Being a Southern California native, I've ridden in snow only a handful of times. It's a real challenge. My hat's off to you knuckleheads for getting out there on the windy tundra and making the best of things. I hope you enjoyed a few good beers after the race.
