Buying used wheels?toronto-rider

I am looking to buy a pair of Mavic Ksyrium wheels that the seller says where purchased in 2001 and have 400 miles on them. Where there 2 different Ksyrium wheel models in 2001 as there are now? What other questions should I ask the seller, or should I not buy used wheels at all. My current road bike was purchased used in 2002 and came with Mavic Cosmos wheels, the rear wheel has to be trued every couple of rides. I was looking to get OpenPro/ultegra wheels to replace them but for $315 for the K's thaught why not.
Should I ask the seller how much he weighs?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Gary

The original version, called the Ksyrium SSC, was avail thru the 2001 model year. Retailed for $800.

In 2002 the top model was the Ksyrium SL, which has a lighter rim (silver between the spokes) and an updated hub. Also retailed for $800.

Also, in 2002 they introduced a cheaper one called the Ksyrium Elite.

$315 is a great deal for any Ksryium wheelset. I say you go with it. Some advice: Ask him if he has the truing wrench. If he doesn't purchase one, and don't use pliers on the nipples because you can damage them.

You can buy brand new Ksyrium Elite wheels on ebay for less than $400. I don't think the Ksyrium SL's were out yet in '01 but look for the silver between the spokes which is the milled out area. This distiguishes the SL models. Otherwise the Elites are the same except that the rims aren't milled (40g savings) and they don't have the zytal spokes.
