Broken Bones all over(9 posts)

Broken Bones all overbikerbob

On Dec. 30th I fell 26 feet off a gable end of a building, breaking both scapula's and the C-6 Vertebra. The neck has been fused and the shoulders should require no surgery. Any one out there experienced any thing like this? How long before you were up and riding? I'm shooting for the Whiteface Mountain Climb June 22. Does this sound realistic?

Thanks, and remember, it's not the fall!

You have my sympathy.

Can't speak to the recovery time for your case. I have been off the bike for a month now as I have been diagnosed with Strep twice since Christmas, all I want to do is sleep.

I keep wandering out to the garage and looking at my bikes. I know by the time I get back on the bike I will have lost a lot of condition, in the meantime I'm going stir crazy.

I feel sorry for you for the amount of time you will have to be off.

Get better.

Jeez, dude, those are some pretty impressive injuries. Even more impressive is the fact that you're already trying to figure out when you can get back on the road. Your post demonstrates some serious fortitude. Good luck on your road to recovery.

Your post shows the effects of pain medication. You need to put your feet up and heal.

I'm a chiropractor. I don't see a lot of scapular fractures but I come across quite a few cervical fusions. I see them go one of two ways. Either the fusion takes and all goes pretty well, or the fusion doesn't take and it can be pretty bad. I'm sharing this with you for one reason ... to encourage you to listen to your doctor. Don't push too hard. You want to make sure the fusion heals properly.

... wowzer... glad you're on the mend!

Do you have a physical therapist? Sounds like you need to coordinate 'tween you, a therapist and your Doc... They, along with your own body is more likely to tell you if your goals are plausible.

Good luck!

Be the bike.

as a licensed paramedic, RN, and a pre-med student, I would say take it easy. those are some severe injuries you have there. your health is a hundred times more important than getting ready for the next race. I wouldn't play around with those kinds of injuries. Give your body the time it needs to repair itself FULLY before you get back on the bike, hardcore. Your asking for problems if you rush this.

best of luck.
When will your body be ready to crash?Continental

Your body will probably be ready to ride a bike long before it is ready to crash. I'd ask my doctor to tell me when my body is ready to tolerate a bike crash. Maybe you'll need to spend time on a trainer while yur body is ready to pedal but your bones aren't ready for impact.
