|on the flats propelling yourself and riding down hills. For me, 32 (which I probably held for a whole 30 secs) and 45 down a winding hill close to my house.|

|On flats..no idea. In the 30's
Downhill: 60+ flying down the Fremont Pass in Colorado. Scary. That's the time you start questioning the physical limitations of your bike. As in.."how old is that front tire???"
|32 on my onespeed; around 60 on my road bike. (nm)||onespeed|

Jan 17, 2003 5:23 PM
|I was told after a brutal sprint that our top speed was 32.5 MPH (I don't use a computer on my fixed bike). Using a 39 X 15 is almost exactly the same as your 42 X 16. I felt like my legs were attached to a giant sewing machine! Even with plenty of fast twitch muscle, things get wild over 140 RPM.|

|59 mph go down Hogpen. I shall never repeat that insane speed!!|

|Yep, that "grainy" pavement down the backside of Hogpen makes my eyeballs dance and causes me about as much worry as the grade itself.
Several years ago doing Six Gap an older couple in an old 911 targa (pristine, silver Sunday car) sat *right on* my butt all the way down Hogpen. This unnerved the crap out of me. Near the bottom the guy pulls up beside me and says, "you realize you were going about 65 mph!" I said, "No, but if I'd popped a tire could you have avoided running over me?" He drove off all pi$$ed.
He'd really been upset if I told him his German speedo was off by _ mph. ;-)

|On my fixed gear(39-16 gearing):
35mph all out sprint on flat.
39.5mph down a long descend, yes, that's over 200rpm. My butt were all over the place by then.
On my road bike(39-50/11-21):
39mph field sprint in races.
It's interesting to see the top sprint only increased by 4mph with all those extra gears.

|I was trying to hit 50 mph. Gravity wasn't enough so I was spinning in a 52/11 trying to hit the magic 50. The hill and my legs ran out at about the same time. I don't think this is prudent, but it is a cheap thrill and I want to hit 50.|

|On flat ground (by myself), I've hit 34mph. For descents, I've hit 56mph on Sky Line Drive, VA. Probably not the brightest idea, seeing that I'd never seen the road before...|

|...on a grade in the high teens without falling.
Downhill, I've gone 51.4. (Monitor pass.) Hope that will increase this summer.

|On a fun downhill in a state park in suburban St. Louis that has a very short, extra steep section at the end. You can really crank it up down the main part of the hill and get a little of that roller coaster/airborne sensation when it feels like you're leaving the ground (which of course you aren't) as you crest the downward bend in the hill. I've done this one a few times and the speedo usually records around 45, but I got 46.1 last time I went out there (last month on a rare 60 degree December afternoon).|

|63 MPH on Maui||the Phantom|
Jan 19, 2003 3:13 PM
|63 MPH for down Mt Haleakla access road on Maui. The road is the longest hill on earth at about 40 miles from sealevel to 10,000+ feet. Well worth the trip for the ultimate ride. Typical average speeds on the descent will be 35+ for about an hour. Very sick stuff indeed. The perfect road??|
Jan 19, 2003 10:25 PM
|Haleakela is up there on the list of stretch goals, as in, "fun to think about, but has a slim margin of actual attainability."
How'd your back hold up on that long a descent? How long to climb it?
I've stayed at a Paia dump a couple of times to windsurf, and I've always sorta gazed longingly up at Haleakela. When I was there, I was actively dissuaded by "real cyclists" from doing the van shuttle up/cruiser down thing, so I passed.
