|Mine works just fine. I'm not sure but the 9spd f. der. may have a slightly narrower cage than an 8spd which could make adjustment a little harder but that's the only problem I can think of.|

|It is recommended you change the inner ring to a nine speed one when using a nine speed chain.|

|8 speed cranks and front and rear derailleurs;
9speed chain, inner chainring, and shifters.

|I upgraded to 9 speed and bought an Ultegra inner chainring. Used it with good results but hated the looks. Went back to old 8 speed inner chain ring (DuraAce) and noticed no decrease in shifting performance.
Can't comment on front derailleur, never tried it.

|Shimano recomends that you use a 9 speed inner chainring if you want to shift while standing. F. der will work, but you might have to ease up while shifting. Rear der will kind of work, unless it is a Dura Ace. If it is 8 speed Dura Ace, forget it.|

|I use an old 7sp ultegra 600 gruppo on my cyclo-cross with a 9sp chain, works perfect. I friend of mine is a shimano sales rep, he tels me that for liability reasons shimano can't say officialy that 7,8,and 9sp are compatible, but in practice you can mix them very well. Except for things like 9sp shifters on a 7sp casette, obviousely.|
