Deepest Section (ie. most Aero ) Aluminum rim?(11 posts)

Deepest Section (ie. most Aero ) Aluminum rim?upandcomer

Does anyone know what is the deepest section aluminum rim available and who makes it. I just need the rim and not the entire wheel. I was looking for rims for both track and as a back up wheelset for the road. I really like the way deep section rims look. I know Zipp makes some carbon rims, but they are really too expensive for me.

... with respect to rim depth, the old CXP30 comes close to a true areo ratio of 4:1 if you can find them (out of production but still found from time to time).

Even with it's deep section, there are other factors to consider (spoke count/type and cross section of deep section... i.e., does it allow for clean seperation of the airflow).

ZIPPs are expensive, and HED 'tain't cheap... but it's cheaper 'n ZIPP. What's your application? It's possible that you might gain more aero bang for your buck with HED... perhaps a used set.

I'd guess that the best bang for your buck would be the Velocity Deep V: 30mm deep & 520 grams. They are strong rims and can be built with fewer spokes than a normal box section rim - adding slightly to their aero advantage. The deepest production Al rim that I know of is the American Classic: 34mm deep & 440 grams - however I beleive that AmClassic is only selling them built with their hubs right now.

As mentioned above, the days of the deep aluminum rims seem over. I found a nice compromise in the ambrosio focus, 28 mm deep, black rims. You can ask about them on www.hergarden.de. Don't be scared if your German is a little rusty, email them in English.

I just remembered... My LBS has a set of Campagnolo Atlanta rims, silver, 28h. I believe they are 30 mm deep, never laced up. Email Randall at bicycleworld@earthlink.com or call (919)735-2964. They'll help you.
