I am interested in buying a trainer but don't know the advantages and disadvantages of a Mag trainer and a fluid trainer.

Fans were good because the resistance increased as you went faster. Similar to how it would feel outside. Unfortunately, they were deafeningly load.

Mags are quieter and, for a while, became an acceptable alternative. They don't have the constantly changing resistance of a fan though. They use a dial to increase resistance.

The Fluid units offer the resistance of a fan without the noise. Kinda like the best of both worlds. Now if the price would come down we'd be set.

That's what the salesman told me but who to believe.
Thanks

Just went through the same thing myself. Decided to get a fluid trainer (CycleOps Fluid2)and love it. This type is what the Spinervals and CTS workout videos use, so the on-screen instructions and workout are directly usable without factoring anything else in. Don't know if that would be true for mag or wind trainers.
