Any idea what the most common wheelset is that is used by the average Joe racer? Notice I didn't ask about the "best" or "lightest" etc. I just wondered what the average guy buys when he has to pay for it himself.

Standard 28 or 32 spoke wheels, depending on weight. If they ride clinchers, probably Open Pros. If they ride sew ups, probably Reflex tubular rims. Ultegra, Dura Ace, or Chorus Hubs. You will always find people on big buck wheels, but most realise that they will crash a few times a year , and don't want to shell out $600 a pop.

...are probably the best all around wheelset when you consider price,performance,weight,and longevity IMO.

At my weight, I've found standard 32 spoke on reflex tubs with Conti Sprinters to be the lightest durable combination (oh, and on Ultegra hubs for cost).
