Prima 199 bar - safety?(7 posts)

Prima 199 bar - safety?outofthesaddle

I read the reviews on the site before buying the Prima 199 bars. I chose them over a Deda bar/stem combo because of all of the horror stories about failing Deda Newton stems. The only negative about the Prima was some flex for larger riders. I'm 150lb but I've notice some flexing and creaking. Will this produce fatigue/failure in an aluminum bar over time? Or I am being overly concerned?

Thanks

Of course it will. But usually the creaking will suddenly stop. Followed by screaming.

I have about 10,000 miles on my Prima 199s with no creak or flex that I discern. I use a 120 Richey WCS stem. The combo is solid as a rock. I weigh 170 and put a fair amount of pressure on the bars in sprints and climbs.

You might check your stem and headset.

Thanks - the creak got noticably better after tightening stem a bit.

A little grease on the bar under the stem clamp sometimes helps as well.

Creak is mostly gone but flex still makes me a little nervous. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't give up during a bunch sprint or nasty descent.

These are tough bars. I used Prima 220's for years and have 199's on one of my bikes. Never had problems with them. Like one of the other posters suggested, make sure your HS is snug as well.
