|Due to the fact that my current (6 mos old) hybrid is a gift from my wife, I have decided to try to make it more enjoyable to ride. I will drop tire size to about 25 and would like to take off the straight handle bar and go to a drop bar. I have checked with my LBS and they want a fortune ($300) to do the conversion. Where can I find drop bars for a MTB (25.4cm) stem? Can I replace my Deore XT brake handles with drop bar handles? Which one and where can I get it? Should I try to use the Deore XT shifters? Will they slide up the drop bar?
....last option before buying a NEW bike.

|To do this job right, you need road handlebars, a road stem and STI brake/shift levers. The length of the stem may need to be shortened, because the bars and brake levers extend the reach. If your bike has cantilever or V-brakes, you may also need an adapter to change the brake cable pull of the STI levers to make them work properly. I'm surprised that your LBS offered to do it for only $300.
Assuming that you hybrid only cost a few hundred dollars to start with, it's not worth that much to make the conversion. What you really want is a road bike.

|Harris Cyclery (sheldonbrown.com will get you there) has the Nitto bars Rusty referred to and Sheldon will answer any questions you email to him and will give advice over the phone if you call durin biz ours (no I'm not related). If you're on a budget here's a second vote for bar ends. Avoid the cost of STI. Brakes may be an issue but these are things you can install yourself. Get familiar with the Sheldon Brown site, much info there.|

|Using a Cinelli quill adaptor ($20)that subs a quill type stem for the current threadless stem then no need to search for 25.4 bars, you need a 26 bar and a threadless stem. Then you need to choose the shifters and/or brake lever system you plan to go with. In a short while you may find that you are under geared and need to spend more money to change drive train parts.
Trade or sell what you have and get what you need, a road bike. What you are trying to do is financially a loosing proposition.

|I really would rather buy a roadbike, but my wife spent about 1,500 on the bike....cannondale with all the extras and you would have thought it a major emotional event when I told her that it was not what I wanted....you would have thought I told her that I had a mistress.|

|One other thing you might consider re: bars: 25.4 is the Japanese standard dimension for handlebars. Nitto makes a number of really beautiful ones with that spec, most of which should be readily obtainable (if by special order) from your LBS.|

|If it has an angled upward stem like is on most comfort bikes, I doubt that getting a bar that fits will help with the fit of the bike from the stem standpoint. Another question is the headset, for a threaded or unthreaded fork? Also old bikes (3 of my oldies) have the 25.4 quill stems. They are out there, you just have to look to find them.|

|I'd really doubt that the rims on a hybrid can accept anything narrower than a 32-maybe a 28, if you are lucky.
If you want a road bike or a touring bike, go buy one. The frame geometry on a hybrid is much different-what you are likely to end up with is a botched-up road bike wannabe with a top tube too short for you.
