Will Deore XT / Dura Ace / Ultegra work?johnnybegood

I think that I have read this before, but can't find it with search. I am building an upgright bike using old parts in the garage, buying what I don't have. I have an old Dura Ace 7400 derailleur in good shape. I want to buy a new Deore XT shifter pod (not a rapid rise) to shift the DA deraileur across a 9 speed Ultegra cog set on a set of wheels I have. Sheldon Brown says that all Shimano 9 speed gears are spaced the same. I have seen Shimano flat bar shifters combined with 105 deraileurs and cogsets from the factory. Will the XT derailleur index the 7400 deraileur properly across the Ultegra cassette? Has anyone used a Deore XT shifter with 9 speed road components.
Not exactly, but.......RickC5

On my wife's road bike, we're using a Dura-Ace shifter with a Deore XT rear derailleur and XT 12-34 cog set. Kinda the opposite of where you're going, but it shifts just fine.

I can't imagine why your set-up wouldn't work, as long as you're sure all the components are 9-speed.

As long as everything is 9 speed it will be compatible. I'm not sure about the D-A 7400 derrailleur though. Is the 7400 8 speed or 9? If its 8 it might work but probably not optimally.
Dura Ace 7400 was "special"MR_GRUMPY

At best, it will shift crappy. The 7400 8 speed system isn't compatible with any other system........ ANY !!
Thanks for your responses.johnnybegood
