We are heading to the Big island of HI in Feb. Do any of you have suggestions for day trips/accomodations. We are flying into Kona, but are open to anything on the island. We'll have our cylocross bikes so both pavement/dirt routes are OK. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You should get a copy of "Mountain Biking the Hawaiian Islands" by John Alford. www.bikehawaii.com The book has lots of routes suitable for cyclocross bikes. Roads are great with smooth, wide paved shoulders. The Ironman route goes from Kona to Hawi and back. Lots of climbing available inland. HP BikeWorks (808) 326-2453 in Kona did a great job for me with a road rental and route advise on my visit last year.
We rent a condo in Waikaloa Villas through Marie at VacaHawaii (808) 883-9747. Quite reasonable if you don't want to be right on the ocean.
I'll be going back Feb. 7 to 21. Looking forward to riding every day!
Thank you!Mootsie
