If you had appx. $2500 to spend on a new roadbike, what
would it be?
I'm looking to purchase a new one here shortly
and am looking for suggestions.
I ride pretty hard and do appx. 150 miles per week weather permitting. I currently ride a Carbon Specialized Epic w/downtube shifters. Thanks!!

well, if it was ME, it would be a Steelman with Dura Ace. Kinda like this:

... but I'd go with Campy Chorus. Hard to beat custom steel in your price range.
Look 386 or 381i on sale, built up as you want (nm)Look381i

Too many choices out there. It really depends on what you like. I'd go for a well priced bike from http://www.gvhbikes.com. Gary has a sale on complete kits with frame purchase, but you'd have to order before the end of the year.
Here's an example of 2 fine examples:
Merckx Majestic Ti w/Chorus 10spd ERGO - $2295. ($1295. + $1000.)

Pinarello Opera w/DuraAce 9spd STI - $2445. ($1395. + $1050.)

He's got a bunch of other Merckx's, Colnago's, Cinelli's, Land Shark's, and even a few Litespeed's that would make a nice quick ride.

..invest in a custom frame in your choice of material and some nice wheels. The rest can be upgraded in time.If you're looking for a long term commitment the frame is where you want to spend most of your money.Do research on frame builders and get solid advice from people who know. This board is the perfect place for that.Ask around and take your time.

I suggest a Strong. A custom for $1200 is pushing your limit but he has a nice product. You can choose tubing and colors.

Good luck, have fun shopping

I don't want to start a frame material war, but
I think I want carbon again. What's the general
opinion of materials now??? Pros/Cons?? Thanks
again for all the input, I could use it.

In comparison to your Specialized they are worlds apart. Like all new material, the early carbon bikes were overbuilt because the makers were not quite sure of the limits of carbon. While yours used alu lugs with carbon tubes bonded to those, most new carbon frames are are of a monocoque design or use carbon lugs in place of the alu ones. One bike that comes to mind in your price range is the Giant TCR, the Ultegra equipped one retails for $2300. Then you would have $200 bucks for pedals.

Keep your suggestions coming guys! Merckx, Look, Trek 5200? Is it cheaper to build a bike rather than off the shelf? Thanks again!
