series race #7, J's race #3.

lemans start (put bike down, walk down hill, wait for start, run up hill, find and mount bike, ride like h#ll,...what recovery? what recovery? ugh!

this week was fast and furious with two good hillclimbs, three sets of obstacles (one with five barriers uphill), and a "C" pack out with something to prove. "B" started 30 seconds before us, and we caught, and later lapped a bunch of 'em. unlike last week, there was very little pavement, and no gravel or walking trail. mostly soft grass, dirt/mud climbs and descents, or fast & wide singletrack. seemed to favor MTB riders.

didn't spew this time either, only wrecked once, but took it in stride and didn't lose any time! :) four of us dropped the "C" pack after the second lap and fought it out, with the series' overall 2nd place rider coming from behind to drop our sorry butts, the series' winner bringing up 4th, and last week's winner and J fighting it out for 2nd. on the last lap, i attacked with everything i had left on a long, slightly uphill trail section, but he had me pretty quick, and it was over. the guy ran those barriers in the sixth lap as fast or faster than the first. there were 30 seconds between 1st and 2nd, 2nd and 3rd, and a little longer from 3rd to 4th, and the "pack" was strung out for several minutes thereafter.

my final results were 8th in the 5th race (my first), 2nd in the 6th race, and 3rd in the 7th race (this one). in each race, especially the last 2, i can remember the first couple laps and the last one, but 15 minutes in the middle are pretty much a blur of drooling, gasping, sweating, nearly crying, trying not to hurl, and pain.

i'll actually train for intensity and running next year, starting in september (instead of not training and not running, like this year). this cyclocross thing is the most *and* least fun you can have with 30 minutes on a fall/winter weekend.
