also, i am thinking about building up a fixed gear bike. in terms of training, what are fixed gear rides supposed to do for you?

I remember a coach we had in collegiate days said that before hard/intensity training, one had to get in 1000 (miles? kilometers?) of base riding. For better or worse, we took it to mean 1000 miles, and did them on our fixed gears, starting in the late fall/early winter. Fixed gears are great for cruddy New England roads and made maintenance a snap, not to mention helped you on your spin (on the flats) and on leg strength (on the hills). Also, they force you to pedal harder to go harder and to back off using the big meat on the flat stuff.
