Polar S150, S510 and S710 users....SS_MB-7

The Polar S150, S510 and S710 HRMs have cycling functions that measures speed, distance, etc. via a fork-mounted sensor and your HRM. I'm going to be using my S710 as part of an indoor training program on a Tacx CycleForce Swing trainer. Part of the program requires I measure cadence as well as speed, HR, etc.

So, I was thinking of buying the Polar cadence kit to use with my S710 so all the data would be stored in one unit. But, then I remembered that the speed sensor needs to be good on an indoor trainer in which the rear wheel spins.

Would it be possible to mount the speed sensor on the rear seat- or chainstay to measure the rear wheel speed and have the sensor angled in such a way that it would transmit to the HRM mounted on my handlebar?

Or, should I buy the relatively cheap Cateye Astrale which measures cadence and speed with the rear wheel?

The cadence kit mounts at the cranks and works fine on a trainer.

I was at the LBS when a customer tried to set up a S710 off the rear wheel just like you described. He tried a few different mounting positions and angle but the signal wouldn't reach the handlebars consistantly. One idea was to mount the HRM on the top tube, closer to the sender unit while using the trainer. Although the top tube idea would have worked, the idea was too unorthodox for him and he bagged the whole thing altogether. He was also running short on patience after fussing with the setup for over an hour.

I'm going to give it a shot by having the HRM on the bars and go to the TT if it doesn't work. Having all the information (HR, cadence, speed, etc.) in 1 unit would be ideal.

If that doesn't work, then I guess I'll buy the Cateye Astrale and use it for it's speed sensor but also use the Polar Cadence least this way, I have cadence data captured in the S710 and will only loose speed.

Basically, your setting the sensor's sensitivity to a longer range. The distance from h-bar to sensor is too far at the stock setting.

This requires a little messing with the internals of the speed sensor, but it's not bad and doesn't take too long. You need one very small screwdriver. Open the sensor and pull out the board; at the top on the battery side, you'll see three very small poles in a row. There's a jumper attached to the middle and bottom poles; slide it off--carefully, if you lose it you'll never find it again--and place it on the middle and top poles. Put the board back in to the sensor body and close it all up. Attach sensor to rear seat stay and set it up as usual.

One comment I've seen is that battery life will be lower, but someone else who's done this says that his battery has lasted as long as the one in his cadence sensor (400+ hours). Also, I think this set-up is messing with my Powertap sensor, but I may have a way around that--use the PT for certain workouts, pushing the Polar sensor out of range of the magnet; use the Polar for certain workouts, pushing the sensor back into range.

I mounted the magnet at the outer edge of the wheel right at the nipple and mounted the speed sensor on my seatstay near the brake. The angle of seatstay puts the speed sensor at a near perfect angle to my handlebar. I then mounted the HRM handlebar mount and HRM to my the mount, gave the wheel a quick spin and sure enough, the speed was displayed. I then hopped on the bike and put in ~30 minutes hoping that my body wouldn't cause any interference between the sensor and the HRM...all the while, the speed was displayed. Now, I just need to buy the cadence kit and I am good-to-go.
