Need help picking a Colnago color...gregg
Dec 2, 2002 1:29 PM
I've long lusted after a nice, Italian, steel frame but could never afford to get one before. My Giant TCR has served me well for many miles, but I've come across the chance to finally get that Italian bike. I like old Bottechias and new Fondriests, but I've decided on a Colnago Master X Light which I will be building up over the holidays.

My question is: Which color would you choose?

Thanks for the input!

(p.s. I promise not to put Shimano on it.)
Go with the red or yellow...Quack

I went with the Lux LX-4 Black paint scheme on a Dream Plus and ended up wishing I had gone with something with more flash. Don't get me wrong, I still get tons of compliments on the LX-4 paint, but think it looks kind of plain now.

You have more choices, according to Trialtir:

I like TM11, shown here on a Dream (no photo for a MXL):

Not to complicate things further, but I believe that, if you are willing to wait, Colnago offers quite a few patterns, going back some years into their catalogue, that are not on the web site.

My original (too-large) Dream Plus was LX-14 and it's really pretty, but also the most commonly chosen color. Right after I ordered it, one of the big Cat 3/4 teams in town got it as their team frame, which was a real downer.

My 'cross bike is AD-4 (black & white) and really classy, tho a bit plain if you are into 'nag flash. I WANTED AD-20 (still do), but didn't want to wait for custom.

My SO has the Reflex blue, which you can get on any frame. It's a really gorgeous color.

My new Dream Plus is TM-11 Landbouwkrediet, and it's a very lustful color combo. If you don't like the little guy on the top tube (and some don't), the newer colors are the way to go.

Mike at Maestro did a great job of hooking me up. I don't have parts to hang off my new frame (yet), but it's sitting in front of the TV begging "build me, build me".

Have fun! Don't let the Giant get lonely, either. My first "real" race bike was a Giant (Cadex), and I almost bought a TCR myself. Giant makes good bikes.
The AD-10 is very elegant looking (nm)Uprwstsdr

I may be in the same boat soon, I actually ordered and received a Pinarello 2002 closeout only to find out that what they call 62cm C-C is not REALLY center to center. I need a short top tube so I may be getting a Dream Plus with or without the B-stay. I already have a steel Anvil Chisel. If it were me I would go with the Rabobank colors, I've always liked those. I tend to like the flashy colors. Enjoy. Where are you getting it from?

I haven't seen too many of these. Most everyone gets yellow or red and I wanted something a bit different.

My wife and I bought C-40's while on out honeymoon 2 years ago. The B-Stay was just coming out so we picked the color from the catalogue. She got the LX-14 which I though was too gaudy looking. I got the OOF. When they came, I was disappointed. Her's was really sharp and mine kinda boring. I love the bike, but wish I'd gone for something really wild looking like the GEO.

I put Dura Ace on both of them. Good enough for Mapei, good enough for me.
I guess you know which color I would pick from this shot -chopper

You will be extremely happy with your choice. It will server you well. I build mine up with Chorus 10 speed and it has been faultless.

and never looked back... I like the LX 10 also, but LX23 with orange handlebar tape and orange Open Corsa tires...very nice indeed.
I have an LX23 also...DINOSAUR

Picking the color was mind boggling for me. I went with this color scheme as my Mom was an artist and she used various shades of orange and blue in her abstracts. But you really can't go wrong with any of the colors. The Colnago paint is gorgous and durable. I have black bar tape and a black saddle, Ritchey Tom Slick's with blue sidewalls, but after they wear out I'm going back to an all black tire. You really can't tell what the color looks like, have to see it in person. I saw a nice blue nago the other day, don't know what paint scheme it was (not LX21). Blue is my favorite color, but I thought it would be nice to go with something different. Havn't seen another one on the road as of yet. To tell you the truth I never really notice the paint unless I am cleaning it up after a ride. The Master X-Light is a fine ride, it was my pick and I could have purchased anything at the time...nice steel ride..you will love it..I got a money back guarantee from my LBS and they couldn't pry it out of my hands...
the LX-11C-40

Love that red. If you want a lot of flash, try a red SDG kevlar saddle and maybe even red bar tape. Tires could be all black or red/black Conti GP3000.

The blue on the Lx10 is traditional and all the old racers that I know of have variations of that blue base

AD10 is beautifulmapei boy
Dec 2, 2002 5:18 PM
AD10 is beautiful. It was my first choice, but my dealer happened to have a Mapei in my size so...

It should be said, though, that my wife's Art Decor Yellow Dream is a stunner. Gentle but vivid. It makes my Mapei color scheme look clumsy and garish.
Another vote for AD1012x23

I have a 62cm AD10 frameset hanging in my spare bedroom. I wish it were a 60, and it will be soon as I sell the 62.

AD10 is the Colnago I saw on a ride the other day, it is a nice shade of blue.

Gregg, don't get all wrapped up in the paint scheme, just pick a color for any silly reason and go with it. You really can't go wrong with any of them.

What fork/groupo are you going with? I went with the Flash fork and have been very happy with it, also shaves about a pound off the bikes weight. As for the groupo, I went Campy as I figured Italian bike=Italian components. Another reason is the owner of my LBS gave me a sweet deal on the Chorus group and I basically got the Mavic Open Pros for free.
Campy, definitely Campy...gregg
Dec 3, 2002 9:45 AM
...I really want Record, but funds (or lack thereof) dictate Chorus. I am also going with the Flash fork.
Still undecided on the wheelset.

I wanted Record too..DINOSAUR

But I couldn't see forking over $400.00 more. The owner of my LBS suggested that I go Chorus with Record levers and rear der, and he split the difference with me on price. I ended up paying $110.00 more than the straight Chorus group and it has worked out fine. When funds allow I can gradually upgrade to full Campy. Regardless, you will love the Campy group..The Chorus group is yesterdays Record anyway, so you really can't go wrong...I just like the looks of the cf ergo levers and rear der..the carbon levers have a nice feel to them....half the fun is shopping and planning how to build the new bike.....don't know if you are set on a saddle but San Marco is making the Regal again. Either the old classic version with ti rails or the new version with short chewing embroidery....I ordered the old version, always wanted one...I just bought a new saddle but- Oh well..I'm sure you will be overrun with suggestions..but you will love the Master X-Light....have fun...

does not the name 'Colnago' already carry enough swank? TM11 (Landbouwcredit) and TM10 (Navigators) also look really nice. I would probably go with TM10.
also, I could be wrong, but isn't the Tecnos recommended for lighter riders, over the MXL? this was something to do with the MXL tubeset being potentially too stiff for the little guys. like I said, I could be wrong. and you're coming off an aluminum frame.
and if you REALLY want stealth, it looks like 008G is available for the MXL.
finally, if I ever get a Dream Cross, I'll get the RX1 scheme. SWEET!!!
good points...gregg
Dec 3, 2002 9:48 AM
...but I'm sold on the steel...simple, effective, and man, those lugs!

I'll check about the stiffness recommendation with the rep. But it'd take a lot to talk me out of the MXL at this point!

AD 21 is the Mapai scheme without the bullet shaped circles as the LX21 - - When I got my Ovalmaster, AD 10 was my first choice - - ironically the old color frames of Mapai.

BUT, be prepared to wait for the color you want. Since Colnago offers so many color schemes, Trialtir can only stock so many framesets. When I went to buy my bike in the Spring, I was limited to 3 color choices in my size. They can get the other colors, but it takes time. They apparantly get a shipment every 3 months from Colnago. They advised I wait until the summer to see what frames they got and they were not taking orders on specific colors, so the wait time is indefinate.

I then found an Ovalmaster in AD21 at another shop on closeout for the (retail) price of a MasterLight, so I jumped on it.

I have toyed with the idea of ordering a MXL for several months. One of the things holding me back is I can't decide what color scheme I would prefer either. A few points to consider:
-- If you order from www.maestro-uk.com, he can get the frame painted in any current or past Colnago paint scheme. Worth considering if you really want a particular color that trialtir doesn't carry for the MXL. Maestro also can get Colnago to paint the forks, chain stays, etc.
-- Colnago paint jobs generally look MUCH better in person than in their web pictures. You really can't compare the two. The web/catalogue photos are merely guides. In person, the colors are much more intense. The photos of the Technos and MXLs on the www.gvhbikes.com website show the true colors much better than the illustrations/photos on the Trialtir web site.
-- Color schemes I like best are LX 11 (saw one in person and it was incredible), AD 11, and LX 24. I also like the LX/AD 10, but already have a blue bike so probably wouldn't order one.
-- No two Colnagos are identical and they often can vary from the pictures posted on the web. For example, the LX 11 I saw in person had red paint fading along the top of the seat tube and back of top tube, although the photo shows it all white. I actually prefer the one I saw in person to the web photo.
