Getting back into shape(2 posts)

I was curious as to how long it would take me to get back into shape and how quickly I can increase my training schedule. I used to race quite competively two years ago when I was a junior(Cat 2, raced in Europe), but I gave up racing and riding in general when I went to college. I recently started riding again and am interested in possibly racing next season(nothing serious local Cat 3). I was wondering how quickly I can start increasing my training volume. I have been rather sedentary that last year and a half... When I racing I was putting in 800 or so hours a year. Thanks Daniel

Start slow and listen to your body. I used to race (Jr., collegiate, Cat 3) and then stopped riding for 17 years before starting again. It took me 6 months (I had to lose 25 lbs), 3 of which were nothing but base miles, before I could start doing intervals, hill work, etc. The hard part was putting my "past performance" out of my mind ("I used to be able to spin a 53x16", etc.) so I didn't kill myself by training too hard. Just for kicks, after 6 months I entered a couple of races. I came in 4th in my first race (time trial) and 5th in my second (road race).

Just take it easy at the beginning, watch what you eat and listen to your body.
