I'm going to be in North County over the last half of the ThanksG week and wanted to do a 70-100 mile ride from the Encinitis area up to the top of Palomar mt.

Any ride routes from the locals would be appreciated. I did find a couple of mc links inlcluding this one:

I also checked the archives and didn't see anything.

On a side note: Is this "semi-trail" suitable for a cross bike?

You might ask over at the Serotta forum........gogene

... a gaggle of them live in and around San Diego. I used to live in Escondido, inland from Encinitas, and rode my motorcycle to Mt Palomar frequently. It's a tough but rewarding ride on a bike. Really beautiful!
There are many variations.JS

The easiest route would be go up PCH from Encinitas to Oceanside, head east on highway 76 and this takes you to the base of Palomar, heading up and then back down and home the same way would be close to 110 mi and this is about the shortest direct route, and really boring compared to other routes. If you are interested in a group ride, the Swami's ride leaves from B&L bicycles in Solana beach(south of Encinitas) at 8:15 on Sat., but beware this ride can be VERY fast with a lot of local pro's and a few international ones (Axel Merkx was out last weekend). When in town take a trip to B&L or Nytro Sports in Encinitas and see if the locals there can help you out, There is some amazing riding in North County but it's difficult to show you without a map. If you plan on doing Nate harrison on a cross bike you better have a triple, it's very steep, I made the same mistake of doing it for the first time on a cross bike with a 39-27 and it was like doing one-legged leg presses for 11 mi., not fun.
