Has anyone bought custom built wheels from Colorado cyclist, and if so can you comment on their build quailty regarding trueness, proper tensioning, etc? Any other good custom wheelbuilders you would recommend?

I had a set of Open Pros laced to Dura Ace hubs built by Colorado Cyclist. The wheels are absolutely bomb-proof and I haven't had a single complaint yet. Plus your really can't beat their price, convenience, and promptness.

Good luck.

Open pros to Chorus hubs. Smooth, true and solid. All the spoke tension seems very consistant. I'm very pleased.
I have two sets, zero complaints, only superlatives....RhodyRider

Older wheelset: Mavic Reflex clincher built with Ultegra "600" hubs, 14/15 DB DT spokes, alloy nipples. Came on the LS I bought from CC in 1997. Not one problem ever, rear wheel has only needed "touch-up" truing about once a year due to me being a clydesdale who is fond of bunny-hopping road kill and various other crap. New set, just got 'em in September: Mavic Open Pro CD built with Ultegra and DT 14/15 DB black spokes and black alloy nipples. Awesome to look at, silky smooth, perfectly true and not one noise out of them. I think they were built by "Dave" at CC. Can't say enough about CC wheels!

Joe Young, former builder for Tom Ritchey and Grant Peterson (Rivendell), at is excellent. He will design and build according to your needs and the wheels are reasonably priced and absolutely bombproof. You can call him at 830.997.6376. Highly recommended!

I have two CC wheelsets. The first--36 14 gauge spokes, Mavic OP and ultegra front, D/A reat hubs--as been completely trouble free for ~6K miles. The second--32 (15/14 gauge F/R) spokes, Mavic OP, ultegra hubs--I had to send back. The rear wheel had a wobble right out of the box, and the front wheel was a creaking, clickly nightmare within 500 miles. CC replaced the front wheel and rebuilt the rear (no charge, even for shipping) and I haven't had any problems since.

The main reason I got the second wheelset was to make strong head and side winds more manageable. 36 14 gauge spokes up front functions like a sail--I almost had to wrestle with the handlebars when the wind comes from 10 or 2 o'clock at more than 20 mph.

I currently have a set of Chorus/Mavic OpenPros built by CC and in the past had a set of Ultegra/Mavic Reflex. Both seemed well built and nicely tensioned. Price was good. No complaints
