|I liv and race in sweden now and we aren't enough racers to have to divide into different categories. We have elite and senior, thats it, and that's optional which one you race in.
But i'm thinking about going to New Zeeland for a year to study and i've found out that they have cat. 1 - cat. 4 races. How do this work? do i have to race in cat. 4 for a while to collect points and then advance up to next cat or can i start in the cat i think will suit me best? And in that case, hiw will i know where to begin?

|if the cat racing system is like that of the US, you start in the lowest cat (here it's cat 5) and work your way up to the higher levels (cat 1 is just before pro). you earn points by the way you place in certain races. obviously a 3rd place finish in a field of 10 is different than a 15th place in a field of 80. here in the US, a USCF cycling regional rep awards upgrades to higher catagories.
hope that gets you started. good luck. i'm jealous about the travels to NZ.
