I think the builder must have had an off day. What does that design buy you (other than a broken frame)?

For a cruiser bike this is probably plenty strong. The tubes look fairly thick and theres no butting going on so why wouldn't it be strong enough?

That long, cantilevered top tube (or is it the seat tube?) ought to provide some suspension, ala Softride, by flexing up and down when the bike hits a bump.

My concern would be the entire front end snapping off. The way that abbreviated head tube joins the rest of the frame looks downright scary.

Yep. You won't find me descending the col de la Colombiere on that thing.

(actually, most of it didn't make it to the moon. most of what is above the top black line did)

Looks to me like this is a Bike Friday, possibly a touring model. I believe Phil Ligget rides a Bike Friday. Just the other day I was thinking one of these would be nice to have if I did a lot of travelling.

... it appears it's the Bike Friday "AirGlide" tourer. (It COULD be a knock-off, maybe.)

If it is a genuine Bike Friday, that would remove my concerns about engineering, I suppose; but it's still too weird for my tastes.

It still scares me too. I'd definitely stand up on railroad crossings and anything that resembled a bump. Unless there are some huge gussets (or better yet, solid tubes) on the front of that bike, I'd be really reluctant to trust it - regardless of who built it.
Yes, I think so... A folding bike?Kristin

It looks like a Bike Friday Air Friday. I test rode one of these about 18 months ago, and it was plenty strong. the beam actually acts as a form of suspension, and is designed for the specific weight of the owner. I'm 6'7" tall, and weigh about 200 pounds and had no qualms whatever about the strength of the beam or the entire bike for that matter. The small diameter wheels are pretty harsh and the beam mitigates the harshness a great deal. It's a pretty nice bike with really quick handling.
