I plan on touring the perimter of the state of PA this July(2003). what is the best touring bike available. This will be a solo trip, and i will be camping, not motels. Thanx alot for your input. right now I am considering a cannondale.
Cannondale is a good choiceKerry

but you asked for "the best touring bike available" and that would depend a lot on issues like fit for you along with the features, durability, etc. Something like a Bruce Gordon Rock n' Road ($2400). Check out the March 2002 edition of Adventure Cyclist for a buyer's guide. They list touring bikes from $600 (Jamis Aurora) to $4200 (Seven Tsunami Ti). Gordon has a reputation and has been in the racket longer than just about anybody, so you won't go wrong there.

Check out the Bianchi Volpe.

Reasonable price, decent components, comfortable ride.
Nothing wrong with Atlantis..retro

I like some of the other recommendations (Bruce Gordon, and I've always thought Cannondales were good value). But if I were going to make a trip like you've described (as I've been planning to for about 20 years), I'd take my Atlantis. Check it out at www.rivendellbicycles.com
