To all bike component and frame makers - it's time that you develope some objective testing methods for all the hype attributes that you try to sell. Show some respect to the people that support your corporations. We make you what you are.
Why? We have proven we will buy it anyways (nm)TJeanloz

To start:

Stiffness
Vibration dampening
Aerodynamics
Longevity
Bearing qualities
Integrated headsets
Lightness - how much this helps, honesty about product weights - straightforwardness
Comfort

There is a frame stiffness measurement device called OTTO that measures a certain type of frame stiffness - this is a very good idea - the bike industry is too much hype - this is an insult to all cyclists.

You really need me to give you some examples?

Just buy any decent German bike publication. Almost every month something gets tested in a scientifically responsible manner.

Here's a well regarded German road bike mag.

This is the lab that they regularly work together with:

The French mag Velo objectively tests the flex and rigidity of a few bikes every issue. They get a bar that screws into the BB and one for the rear drop outs and they put weights on them and measure the deflection. I think they have a measure for verticle compliance as well. I don't know what "real world" value this has but it will show an objective difference between rigs. God knows one man's sense of plush is another's equivalent to straddling an anvil.

Where do you find said German mags?
Full marks for that attention-grabbing header though! ;-) (nm)VertAddict
