road stem vs. mountain stem - what's the difference?Fez

are these interchangeable? other than stem rise, the most obvious difference is for bar diameter. road uses the 26.0 or 31.8(oversize) standard. mountain seems to use 25.4. so is it a bad idea to substitute a 25.4 mountain stem for a 26.0 road appliation?

I have a thomson mtn stem that I as thinking of trying on the road bike before committing to it.

smaller clamp wil crimp your bars when you torque down on it. But you can try it if you want. some people say it works just fine. Personally, i like to stay out of the hospital.

With the removable face plate design of a Thomson stem you shouldn't have any problems. This is a very common practice on tandems.
