The Trial Commute

By Todd Madson (c) October 27, 2002

Today's ride involved my wife Kate and my friend Todd.

We decided to ride to Kate's workplace near Cedar Lake in Minneapolis to see if bike commuting might be an option in the future and how long it would take.

Kate had done a 16 mile ride in late August but hadn't done anything in the 20 mile range and this would be slightly over that.

This brings her seasons' mileage to about 385 miles, the most riding she's done in years. The bike bug has bitten!

The ride originated in the Bloomington area, following Penn Avenue to 80th street then points west to York and then north until we were near Lake Harriet.

Once we were there it was a matter of using the trail system to get there.

Once we had arrived and rested a bit and ate something we followed the trails south and east towards Penn Avenue out of Minneapolis into Richfield and crossed 494 via the new bridge located at 494 and Penn.

Technically it's not open yet but there were many pedestrians on the bridge so we figured it wouldn't hurt anything (cue the "Breakin' the Law" music by Judas Priest).

It was cold (38 degrees!) and windy and we went into a headwind on the outgoing trip, the tailwind
on the way back helped. It was a cold ride but a good one. My suspicions are there won't be
too many more rides this year.

Distance one way: 9.9 miles, 54.2 minutes.

Return Trip: 11.3 miles

Total ride distance: 21.2 miles.

Total Ride Time: 2 hrs, 20 minutes.
