look pedal/cleat question(3 posts)

look pedal/cleat questionmclamb6

just installed a fresh pair of cleats for my looks. now the pedals seem "tighter" when clipped in. the float isn't coming as freely as before, a little more difficult to kick in/out. is this something that will dissipate with a little wear on the cleat(my old cleats were fairly worn)? would a bit of grease on the pedals help? thanks in advance....

The likely "culprit" is the little black rubber pad which pushes through from the back of the cleat. I changed my cleats last weekend and noticed that the pad on the old cleats had worn down until it was flush with the cleat, whereas the new one protrudes evenly about 1/8 of an inch. I also noticed the differences you describe. I think that's the way it's supposed to feel. Just be sure that you got the rubber pad in correctly, otherwise it protudes unevenly and much more than 1/8 of an inch on one end!

is supposed to stick through the cleat. It gives additional pressure against the pedal so there is no slop within the cleat/pedal interface. The rule of thumb is to change you cleats when the little circles on the cleats are no longer visible. They are actually wear indicators.
