Some of you asked for an early heads-up when this year's year's etape du tour was announced -- so here it is: it will take place on the 20th of July over the Pau-Bayonne stage. As the start/finish are in larger towns than last year, lodging will be less of a problem. Here is the link to the english language announcement:

I looked at the profile of the stage. The course is longer, but looks easier than last year's etape. On the other hand, although the climbs for the 2003 etape are shorter than they were in 2002, they are steeper. What is your opinion of the course?
Thanks for the heads-upphilippec

At first I was a little dissapointed that they had not chosen the St. Girons stage put, like you, I looked closely at the climbs. 2.5 kms @ 10.5% and 8.8kms @ 9.2% -- ouch! The col de Bagargui is longer and steeper than the tough first bit of the Ventoux climb from Bedoin to the Chalet Reynard and god knows that is some hard climbing! Plus, the 200 km distance w/ many long flat segments should make for some interesting pack dynamics... I'll be practicing my echelon skills this winter! It will be great fun!

I have scoped out a few lodging options in Gite d'Etapes -- contact me at philippecrist@noos.fr (w/copy to philippe.crist@oecd.org) and I'll lay out what I've found in the way of cheap, comfortable options
