Noisy SRAM Chain on Dura Ace(5 posts)

Noisy SRAM Chain on Dura Acejohnnybegood

Posted on bicycling.com and got no response: Yesterday I did my first ride with a new SRAM PC99R chain. I replaced my CN7701 Dura Ace chain because it was dinging against the shift pins on my 53 chainring when crossed to the third smallest cog. SRAM still dings, but much less. The SRAM chain measured about 1/64 inch narrower than the Dura Ace chain. The SRAM shifts better than the Dura Ace, but it is alot noiser when spinning. It sounds like you can hear a very soft click when every link engages the chainring. Anyone else think that the SRAM is noiser than a Dura Ace?

keep it well lubed and it will go away. You might also have a worn chainring with new chain problem.
sure about the width???C-40

The shimano 9 speed chain should be the narrowest on the market. It also has flush pins.

The SRAM 9 speed chain is the same width as a campy 9 chain. Both are wider than a shimano 9 speed chain and also have protruding pins.

The SRAM chain should not be an improvement for any rubbing problems, unless you were using a Shimano 8 speed chain.

Unless you have a bike with very short chainstays, you shouldn't get any chain rub on the third cog and only a amount (perhaps none) on the second. Are you sure you have the correct spindle length on the BB?

I had the same problem with my Sram chain on Ultegra cassette/rings. I just bought a new ultegra cassette and replaced both chainrings. I then decided to by a Sram chain because of the ease of chain cleaning with their special link. I noticed that the drivetrain was particularly loud. Fortunately, this went away after only a few rides. I even put another new Sram chain on after about a month and it required the same break in period in order to quiet down.
I found it noisy tooJefferson

I run a Dura-Ace cassette and chainrings. I replaced my dura-ace chain with a Pc-99R SRAM chain in the spring of '02. It was noisy when new. I put over 700 miles on it and it never got any quieter. In fact, it got louder. I lube my chain religously with White Lightning. I just put a new dura-ace chain back on and it runs quiet again. I really liked the removable gold link for cleaning but the noise made me go back to Shimano.
