I come to this here message board quite often, and I've always wondered.....What's the typical bodyweight of the cyclists who post here? You see, I'm 240lbs. I'm built much more like an NFL Linebacker than, oh say, your average cyclist. I know that there are big guys out there that ride, but it can get quite lonely being a "Clydesdale." Thanks for reading!

I got the old bike back in shape, and it got me back in shape. Seems like a fair arrangement to me.

At Trexlertown this past weekend, I noticed that the attendees tended to be quite fit. That's not to say they were all lightweight, thin-as-a-rail, built-like-a-roadbike types. Many were kinda linebackerish, including one RBR'er I met. Most of the big guys looked fit enough, just really strong -- many looked like they might be MTBers.
I am the linebackerbigrider

That is right. I am 6'2" range from 220 to 240 and wear a 48long jacket with a 38 inch waist. I was over 270lb BC (before cycling)

I'M 6' 5." This time last year before I threw myself into cycling, I topped out @ 225lbs (all beer gut) I'm 35 and most my life I was thin by nature. Now, after kicking the mtb to the curb and riding my 2300 on my daily commute to work of 11 mi each way and adding another 10 on the homeward ride, I am down to 195 lbs I feel much more healthy even though I have that "thin as a rail" look again.

I still feel like I'm a "Clydesdale" in comparison to all the 56cm riding die-hards out there though.

Back when I raced MTB, I was an OK climber. Now I can't climb over a speed bump! Maybe if I lived in Austin instead of Houston, I could develop it again. At least I can sprint with the 1,2, & 3's, but only if I can stay with them the fast preceding miles! Genetics are strange... or is it just me?

Tisk, tisk. Never ask a woman her weight.Kristin
Oct 16, 2002 6:42 AM
Quick question. Who weighs more, a athletic man or an athletic woman--if they are the same height and frame size?
The answer to your questionniteschaos
Oct 16, 2002 7:09 AM
Assuminig same hieght, frame size, and health, the man will be heavier. This is due to the fact that men can more easily achieve (and most importantly more healthily achieve) lower body fat percentages. A fit male cyclist can have body fat in the 6 to 8% range without any real risk. A female below 10% puts herself at many risk, from anemia to early ostioperosis (from what I've read anyways).
Wouldn't that mean that the man is lighter then?Kristin
Oct 16, 2002 7:29 AM
not heavier? Because the woman has a high BF count.
muscle weighs more than fat..dotkaye
Oct 16, 2002 8:05 AM
so the man has proportionally more muscle, therefore heavier..
Same Volume(greater density)=greater mass, Scales so out-datedniteschaos
Oct 16, 2002 4:25 PM
The fact that some women think the scale determines what kind of shape they are in anymore really shows archaic thinking. Same for guys as well. I know some chubby guys that are lighter than me because they are nothing but walking cream puffs. There has got to be more info on Measurements as an indicator of health: like thigh circumfrence in relation to inseam length in relation to body fat percentage. I think that would give a more accurate number of "shape" than a device that measure simply your force upon this lop-sided planet.

beginning of the year, 175lbs after too much holiday: mid-year down to 148lbs after viral meningitis: so a bit of a wild ride this year. Typically I get faster down to about 155lbs, below that it seems strength losses take a toll and I actually get slower. That is of course when losing weight through training, losing weight through illness doesn't help a bit..

I'm about 5'9" and 175lbs (about the same weight I've been for 4 or 5 years). That seems to be bigger than most of the guys here. I guess that's what 8 years of playing football gets you. Not that I was ever really that big when I played football anyways (same size and I played offensive guard)

I was one of those people that could not gain weight, I weighed a skinny 150 most of life... then in the last couple of years I shot up to 200lbs. I started cycling on a regular basis at the end of last winter and have managed to drop down to 189. Problem is every time I shed a pound of fat I'm doing it by replacing it with muscle. I look a lot better and my BF% has probably gone way down, but the scales don't reflect the change that much. I'd like to be in the 170-180 range.
