Is anyone using the egg beaters for a road pedal? I have thought about using them. If anyone is, let me know how you like them? I have never used them before, but I can get them cheap.

there are (more expensive) pedals that do the job of a road pedal better (ie, lighter weight, more float, bigger platform, etc). having said that, egg beaters are very easy to clip into, and have better cornering clearance than most. if you have an MTB/cross bike and want to only run 1 set of pedals, you could indeed use egg beaters. you would probably want to run these with stiff soles, as the platform is not the largest one out there. they are far more attractive for off-road use.

Can you use regular SPD cleats, or do you need eggbeater specific ones?

can't use SPDs. the EB cleats are made of brass; some on MTBR have complained of fast wear (that was the whole idea, for the cleat to wear faster than the pedal). Crank Bros is currently designing something that is slightly harder, but is still softer than the pedal cage.
