May be Moving to Vegas area from L.A. I plan on commuting to work on a road bike. Where are some good scenic rides in this area. I realize that the summers are brutal, how is the coldest temps.
Thanks in advance

I used to live in the Green Valley area of Henderson, near the Vegas city limits. Left in 1995, so my experience is 7 years ago, potentially invalid. Back then the road riding was (IMHO) intolerable. There were no (zero) bike lanes. The road sides were full of debris - sand, broken glass, cans, etc. On the wide, major city streets drivers go fast and often run traffic lights. The incidence of drinking and driving is high. The riding from the west side of town out to Red Rock Canyon and beyond was the best. Winters can be cold and windy. Not a bike friendly place.

Lived in LV for 30 years... my thoughts on riding in Las Vegas:

Inconsiderate and dangerous drivers.
Very few bike lanes.
Hot summers.
Cold winters.
Windy all the time.

Red Rock is a fairly good area to ride... get with a local club to ride with, safety in numbers!

Maybe take up mountain biking... the MTB riding is pretty good.

Good Luck!

Did some mtb'ing there recently and ran into a group of roadies who said it was alllllllways windy there. The roads looked very desolate and pretty grim actually.

I just moved to Vegas... people on this board and in my hometown scared me with the same garbage. While it is not a Tucson or Portland or any other really bike friendly town, it is more than tolerable. Good open stretches of road out west. I commute 15 miles each way to work and again, it is more than tolerable. Good luck!

How far is Red Rock from Vegas, what about Lake Mead. Is there any good road rides around lake mead? I have to admit, I'm worried about the drunks and broken beer bottle gutters not to mention the hot summers. It seems easy enough to dress for the cold Vegas temps. I've been made a good job offer that I've turned down once before a year ago but now researching all of what Las Vegas has to offer. I like riding through Zion Canyon in Utah and that would become a 2hr drive rather than an 8hr drive. I see a bike commute from Vegas (near Interstate 15) to Henderson kinda scary. I dont need to commute but it's a good way to log some miles durring the week.

I'm guessing but from the Strip out to Red Rock Canyon is probably, 15-20 miles. Uphill going out, nice easy cruise back to town.

Didn't mean to indicate that there are no good rides around Las Vegas, that's not true. And there a 3-4 months per year when the weather is ideal for riding. But I will stand by my statement that the place is not bike friendly. AND I would strongly recommend NOT commuting during high traffic hours, unless you have no other choices.
