|I get a lot of my miles from commuting (40 miles round trip, 2 days a week). I also MTB and do longer weekend road rides. I'm probably like a lot of others. I tend to feel like if I don't ride harder, I'm wasting my ride. Sometimes I feel over tired.
I'm trying to make a point to make use one of my commuting days as a slow recovery ride. Today for example, it took 1:25 to get to work, usually its around 1:10. I was dogging it the whole way. I'll do the same on the way home.
My question is, is a double session, 40 mile recovery ride not really a recovery ride? Should they be shorter and be of less time?

|For recovery rides, it was too long or too hard if you feel worse after the ride than you did before. On good recovery rides, I actually feel much better after the ride (and the day after, too).

|I suspect the recovery ride is pretty much individual and subjective. Yet, I'm intrigued by your comment about not riding hard is wasting your time. I'm sure many are caught up in that POV. And, to that point, what is the difference between recovery rides and junk miles?|

|I would take a recovery ride to be a deliberate, slow ride, with not even a hint of a sprint or intense climb. I was going painfully slow today.
Junk miles I suppose would be just riding and riding to boost the mileage or to say "I rode!", even though you feel crappy. I find myself in that bucket sometimes (too much lately), so by doing the deliberate slow ride, I'm hoping to avoid that.
I'm just wondering if doing 20 slow miles in the AM and then again in the PM is too much for a recovery ride (too long? by the end of the day I'll have ridden nearly three hours) and was wondering of others experiences, especially those that commute.
My legs do feel good right now, so hopefully I'll stay slow on the way home and my ride tomorrow I'll feel springy.

|My guidelines for recovery rides are not going anaerobic and not riding hard enough to make any part of my legs hurt. The little game I play, because I feel much like you describe about 'wasting my ride', is how fast I can go without doing either for the last 20 minutes or so. Often I'll ride out and back trying to get back a few minutes faster.|

|Without knowing what your route looks like I have a feeling your not dogging it enough. Got about a 13.5 mph ave speed and concidering stop signs and lights, wind and hills along the way your probally still riding too fast. You should just spin and it should feel like you almost have no force on the pedals. 14 mph should be your max speed on the flats, so your ave speed is going to be much less. Distance is more a matter of how much extra time you have to devote to it and mentally being able to do it for that amount of time.|
