Your "photoshopping skills" need a bit of improvement- might want to lasso a bit closer to the bike, apply a subtle blur after you paste, and spend a bit more time color matching the sky (quite a bit of detail work of you go between the spokes, but if you zoom way it, it is doable) ;)

I would at least have rotated the bike and "rider" just a bit.

After close examination, it is apparent this mishap was caused by too many spacers and a rising stem!

Your comments on this board are really beginning to show a trend. I now highly, make that VERY highly doubt your story about being in college. Many of us on this board have been there long ago and now live the lives you dream about when you lay your head down on your pillow (in the room down the hall from your mommy). I suspect you are actually a high school kid, if that, with nothing better to do than call people names on a board like this one.

That's the only explanation that makes any sense. No adult would waste their time posturing about their moral righteousness only to follow it immediately with high school insults.

moral righteousnessweiwentg
Oct 11, 2002 9:01 AM
I do not claim to be full of moral righteousness. the whole point of what I'm saying is that it's wrong to go laughing at people who get killed, no matter how much they asked for it.
as for the insults, I admit I probably got carried away. but go back and check who threw the first one, johng or me.
Well, since you're obviously so more evolved (cont)look271

than the rest of us bottom dwellers, perhaps you should take your social commentary elsewhere. Get the stick out of your a#$ and learn to laugh a little bit at yourself (and others.) It's good therapy.

Oct 11, 2002 9:07 AM
there's tongue-in-cheek and tasteful, and there's tongue in cheek but tasteless. I think this is one of the latter. we might tease Doug about the Star fork on his 'Nago. that would, presumably, be irritating for him. this incident involves SOMEONE'S LIFE. I don't think his parents would be just mildly irritated if they logged on to RBR. if you or some people think it's fashionable to be insensitive, that is plain stupid. so, no, I will NOT lighten up about this.
remember that bike messenger who got killed by the SUV driver in Chicago? you could say that, by hitting the guy's hood, he was asking for it. I don't see that anyone taunted him afterward, and for good reason. we'd better hold ourselves to the same standard here.

You sure use the words "I think" a whole lot when deciding what others are thinking.......

Everyone will interpret things differently, some will think Doug's post tasetless, some won't. You're going to have to learn that you won't convince most people to see things your way, no matter how right or wrong you or they are. Especially with your tactics.

the pointDougSloan
Oct 11, 2002 10:42 AM
The point is exaggeration to the point of absurdity. Trying to make light of something that we all damn well know really isn't funny, but the thought of some idiot being so stupid to try something like this is a bit humorous. Extreme stupidity can be funny. Exaggeration is funny. The rigged up photos in this thread, I think, demonstrate that point. The whole thing is so absurd!

No, again, the death is not funny. No one present would have been laughing, and no one would ever think of disrespecting the guy or his family by even hinting at the humor of the situation in their presence. But, we are extremely removed from that situation. There is no danger, at least that I can imagine, that that will happen.

Everyone opposed, honestly tell us that you would find no humor whatsoever if someone slipped on a banana peel, fell in a wedding cake -- come to think of it, what about all those video shows on TV making fun of guys getting hit in the crotch by a ball whacked by their 5 year olds? This is an extreme example, but it's the same thing. We are adult enough to distiguish inappropriate responses when it might affect someone associated with the victim, and finding humor in a totally absurd situation.

No. Death is not funny. What's funny is anyone thinking that they would survive such a stupid stunt.

the pointweiwentg
Oct 11, 2002 10:53 AM
if I slipped on a banana peel and fell into a wedding cake, that would be funny. I'd probably post the pics on RBR.
but if I did that and died, I would not personally want pics of that even to get posted. if people started making snide remarks, I would not personally find that very nice.
and to answer my own question, if my kid did some stunt like that and died, and people on this forum started laughing at it, I would be enraged.
I think that if you wouldn't laugh if you were there, you shouldn't laugh if you weren't. if you would, of course, you are welcome to whatever fate befalls you.
in my line of study, blaming the victim is a Very Bad Thing. throughout history oppressors of all types have blamed their own victims.
and yes, Doug, I still think that was rather tasteless of you, even if it wasn't done with intent to offend. if you slipped on a banana peel, landed in a wedding cakeSpunout
Oct 11, 2002 11:01 AM
and died,,, it would be tasteless of me to think that it was funny.

But, I think that would be funny. Sorry. This is better than Monty PYthon. Actually, this whole thread is Pythonesque, no?
limited engagementDougSloan
Oct 11, 2002 11:08 AM
I really don't want to belabor this much, but what the heck does this have to do with "blaming the victim?" No one is "blaming" anyone; nonetheless, who else would you blame? They guy's parents for having him? The wall builders for making it too big?

I think you are really stretching some of your comments, trying to weave in all sorts of political ideas, when this has absolutely nothing to do with politics, religion, national origin, or any of that.

The humor is the situation, the absurd attempt, the ludicrous miscalculation; omit any reference to the end result, let's just show the picture and say the result was not "successful." Is it humorous then? No one is laughing at the result, the death; he humor is the stupidity of the attempt.

And that's all I have to say about that.

> I think you are really stretching some of your comments, trying to weave in all sorts of political ideas, when this has absolutely nothing to do with politics, religion, national origin, or any of that.

a fair enough criticism.

> No one is laughing at the result, the death; he humor is the stupidity of the attempt.

but face it, he did die. I don't think people dead by stupidity deserved to be laughed at, anymore. whether you're laughing at him or the situation, you're laughing. I personally would not do that. and if I had known this guy personally, and someone made some snide remark within my earshot, I would probably fill that person's mouth with my fist. I would certainly feel tempted to, at any rate. and to answer your question, if you omitted any reference to the end result, and if he had landed in a safety net and got off with bruises, I probably would be laughing. any other outcome, and I wouldn't be.
OK, now I think I understand your positionPescador

Couple of questions...klay
Oct 11, 2002 12:05 PM
What makes this man stupid and the situation absurd? Was it the attempt or the fact that he failed? Had he survived, would the situation be as absurd or humorous?

Couple of questions...The Human G-Nome
Oct 11, 2002 12:13 PM
yes, it would be absurd whether he made it or not. much as most of what Evol Kineval did was absurd and laughable. much as much of what the the extreme-sports afficionados do is absurd and laughable. NO ONE is laughing because the man died. some people don't get Monty Python either and if that's you, no one's going to hold it against you. they will however, think you're overreacting later when you call them simple-minded fools just for getting the "joke". there will be no protests when the coyote can't catch the roadrunner and ends up falling off the cliff or blown up by any of the thousands of fine ACME products.
Couple of questions...klay
Oct 11, 2002 12:54 PM
Of all your examples, none of them include an actual real death and I don't think they are the equivalent.

I understand the idea that something so absurd can be funny. However, when you need to make sure you are not overheard by friends or relatives then maybe, (as Doug says above), what you are laughing at is a little darker than just absurd.

Couple of questions...The Human G-Nome
Oct 11, 2002 1:18 PM
first off, the original picture of this incident i had saved did not include the bloody after pictures. IMO, these are in much poorer taste then any stupid joke about jumping some monument. what was the benefit of posting pictures showing the bloody mangled body and the people carrying him away like a bag of bones? THIS is what's tastless. the jokes you've heard are ONLY absurd. tasteless, yes. but certainly not anymore tastless then the formentioned pics.
Very good point....klay
Oct 11, 2002 1:52 PM
...and maybe you have hit on a key element - the visuals. I definitely agree with you on the "after" photos.

When I first saw that photo of that guy in mid air, the only thoughts I had were that we are seeing someone in their last seconds of life. One second later this man is hitting the deck and dying. No matter where cut and paste that image, I still have that thought and it's a hard one to ignore.

I guess I don't see how so many folks could ignore it or rationalize it away...

Very good point....The Human G-Nome
Oct 11, 2002 2:19 PM
the fact is, the guy has passed on to a better place. or perhaps he's been reincarnated depending on his religion. no matter, he's gone now. since i would venture to say no one on this forum has ever known the deceased or any member of his family, this person is the equivilent of a fictional character. many would have more empathy with the sitcom stars they stare blankly at each day. we are not mocking his life, nor his death but merely the idea of someone trying to jump the freakin' great wall of china. anyone who knew of this man should be wishing their best to his family. for anyone who didn't know him, he didn't exist for you and we are not dissing his legacy.

the after photos are, obviously, in very poor taste. akin to slowing down for an accident scene. the dude flying through the air looks like a comedian. i can't help that i think it's funny. i could lie and say i cry when i look at that picture, but what's the point of that? try as i might, i can't imagine this making me a bad person or any less empathetic toward an accidental death the any other human being.
