Need advce on gearing options(4 posts)

Need advce on gearing optionskayak42

My wife has an older bike drivetrain Shimano 600 53-42
13-15-17-19-22-26. She needs lower gears as we live in the mountains. I plan to ditch the 42. However she really doesn't need a 53(that is almost her age). What are my options other than a 39 for a chainring? Would like a 35-45 be an option. It has downtube friction shifters.

Thanks,
BrianH

Peter White Cycles or Harris Cyclery both have a fairly large selection of chainrings to fit your crank and can help you make your selection.

if you're keeping the crankset, the smallest possible inner ring is 38. this is the smallest inner ring ever made for the 130mm BCD. you could get a crank with a 110mm BCD - this would open up a far wider range of gearing (yes, 35/45 or even lower is entirely possible).
Thanks for the info nmkayak42
